Dear MoveCenter Experts: We move employee internationally and want to ensure we’re providing the right policy benefits to meet their needs. What is the best way to ship their household goods?
There’s more than one “best” answer depending on how much stuff we’re talking about, how soon it will be needed and what your budget allows. As mere mortals, we can’t snap our fingers and make items magically appear in the new country, so we’re left with three options: luggage, ocean and air.
Most corporate international relocation and assignment policies allow for additional luggage on the transferee’s flight so that they can take enough clothing, toys, etc. to get through the first few weeks.

Air shipments are the best option for those items needed shortly after arrival which won’t fit in a suitcase, as time for transit and customs for an air shipments is 2-3 weeks. Air shipments are costly, so most employers strictly control the size.
The most economical method is an ocean container shipment. Transit times for ocean shipments vary based on distance and how quickly customs clears the container(s), but they are typically 6-8 weeks. Because of the cost savings, it’s best to maximize the use of the container.
